Prelim Flat Plans

I have chosen the colours purple, blue and black to use in my magazine because these colours link the magazine to the college: purple is QE’s recognisable colour. Blue and purple have a royal touch to them: this shows that students at QE are superior to everyone at other colleges. Black is sophisticated colour that suggests education, this contrasts with the purple to show the students enjoy their social life but also take their college work seriously and aim for the best.

The mast head is a large font placed almost at the top of page, this stands out and is noticed straight away. The mast head is kept the same font and colour throughout the issues so it becomes an iconic logo for the magazine to be easily recognised. It is simple yet attractive to the audience as it is what they are – students. The QE logo is also placed in the top right hand corner to show which college the magazine is about. Above the mast head is a sky line with a slogan, 'the key to the future' is it written in black capitals so it stands out on the cover.

The primary photograph on my front cover is a medium close up, it is over half of the length of the cover and is one of the first things you notice when looking at the magazine.  The costume worn is casual so that it is suitable to wear to college with the hair tied up.Notebooks will be used as props as these are essential to a student at college. She is smiling giving a warm and friendly impression to the new students, this tells them that the college has a lovely environment which keeps people happy and makes them feel comfortable. The photograph of the student is taken in the park, with a garden environment shown in the background, this shows that the park is a relaxing place to spend time with your friends. The photo is a medium close up and taken of the waist upwards, the subject is about two metres from the camera and the lighting is natural sunlight.

Along the left hand edge of the page and beside the photo are sell lines. These are all shown in capitals to make them stand out at a glance, important words such as ‘success’ and ‘win’ are in a larger front to draw attention to them. The main sell line, ‘Fresher’s Fayre’, is one of the important events taking place in the college that week. New students are easily informed about this by looking at the front cover and reading the magazine. Underneath the main sell line are more articles which are also included in the magazine, the fonts are smaller so they do not withdraw all the attention from the main article. The font on the front cover are all different sizes, this makes the magazine feel more casual and more attractive to the target audience of students.

Across the bottom is a banner to welcome the first years to their new college - this is a direct invitation for them to read the magazine and find out about things that happen within college. In the corner is a star bubble advertising the new college shape – the pointed shape draws attention and quickly lets them know of the new room in college.

The contents page follows the same colour scheme as the front cover, this follows throughout the whole magazine which makes it iconic and easy to recognise from any page. At the top of the page is the title of the magazine in large letters and also the QE logo in the top right hand corner again. Once again the purple colour represents the QE logo and links it to the college. Underneath the magazine's title is the page title: contents. It is in black capitals so it stands out on the white background. next to this in large, lowercase letters it says 'this week' this promotes the casual house style that students find attractive.

Along the right hand side are three photographs that give an insight to what is in the magazine. in the bottom left corner of the photograph is the page number that that particular article can be found on. The first photograph is a group picture of students in front of the Eiffel Tower, Paris. Straight away the reader can be informed of places they could be taken to. The second photograph is of 5 A level students stood in front of the college waving their results card in the air, they have  a very happy facial expression: this shows that QE pushes their students to achieve the best and it is all worth it in the end. The final photograph on the contents page is of a netball game in action. In the background you can see the scoreboard and the QE team is in the lead. Winning games is always attractive to student and this may make them want to become involved with team games.

On the left hand side has a list of articles in the magazine along with their page number. The title of the article is in capital letters and purple coloured font, the royal purple also suggests that the students who attend QE are very stylish. Underneath the article title is a brief summary of the article, this interests the reader before they read the article. The summary is in blue lowercase letters, this contrasts the title of the article and makes sure it is noticed after the article title has been read. in the bottom corner is a small box displaying all the names of people who have been involved with producing the magazine. It is in a small black font so it does not withdraw all the attention from the main parts of the page.
