Photography Test Shoots

Following my research i have decided to do a photography test shoot to develop my skills in composing a successful shot. I experimented with different angles, distances, body language and facial expressions.

This is a medium shot, it would probably appear on a front cover, above the head is room for a masthead and room for sell lines aligned to the left. The eyeline of the model falls into the top and creates a direct address with the audience. The photograph is taken in a studio set up using a microphone as a prop, this add the musical feel to the image. The facial expression connotes the fun and liveliness of the image and their music.

This medium shot would best suit a double page spread. Instead the model is looking down towards the guitar suggesting his passion and love for his music. The acoustic guitar used as a prop connotes the music is more indie rather than and upbeat mainstream song. The costume fits well with the 'indie theme' of the picture which would appeal to a the target audience.

This photograph was taken on a location, behind the models there is a brick wall. The photograph could be used on a contents page to attract the attention of the audience and make them want to read the article. The models are pictured in the centre of the frame drawing in all the attention. Their pose is cool and casual which would appeal to the audience who don't want anything too 'fake' and 'extravagant'.

Following my test shoot i have decided to vary the location of the photographs; i will take some in the photography studio to give the magazine a professional touch but i will also take some on a location to add a realistic feel to the magazine. The costume and facial expressions of the models needs to reflect the genre of the magazine and what the audience what so i will make the photographs look as fun and exciting as possible. Long shots are best for contents pages and double page spreads, whereas i think a close up is most suited for a front cover as it shows the detail of the model better.
