Flat Plans

My front cover is all about attracting the audience's attention. For my magazine i have chosen the colours black, red and white. The bright red stands out against that black and white colours emphasises important and key details of the magazine, the red colours also connotes the love and passion the magazine, and its readers, has towards mainstream music. the black and white work together to connote that mainstream music is naughty but nice.

Next to the logo is a sky line, advertising a competition. The word win is in a large font to attract attention, this interests the audience to enter in hope they win the competition. The competition is a chance to win tickets to see Steff, her name is in a large red font to make her name stand off the page and once again, attract in the attention.

The masthead is in a large font in the top left corner of the page, it is in a bright red font to make it stand out to the reader. I have chosen the title 'M' this could stand for 'mainstream' or 'music' which clearly indicates the genre of the magazine. The logo is simple yet attractive audience, it will be used throughout the issue of the magazine to make it easily recognisable and iconic. Under the title is the website of the magazine, this uses the name of the magazine and also what the letter stands for : 'www.mformainstream.com' the website is written in a small black font which contrasts against the red background.

The primary photograph i have used on my front cover is a medium cover of a model, posing as a music artist. The costume worn by the artists will be fashionable and very on trend, this will appeal to the audience as it would be something they would wear. The photograph will be taken in the photography studio, this gives the image a white background making it look professional. Lighting will be used to enhance the image and bring out the key details of the model. A secondary photograph of a band, Signs, has also been used on the front cover to show who else is included in the magazine.

Along the left hand side of the page and beside the photograph are sell lines. They are shown in capitals to make them stand out, underneath is a brief explanation of the article to show what it is about, these are in lower case letters so they do not distract the viewer from the article title. The fonts on the front cover are different sizes, this makes things stand out and become more noticeable first, for example, the masthead wants to be noticed first, followed by the main sell line, followed by the sell lines; this will also be the order of font size from biggest to smallest.

In the bottom left corner is a circle banner, the word 'plus' indicates that the audience are getting something for free. There is also a rectangular banner to indicate another key page within the magazine, a documentary on a new hot band, Two-Way. the red and black outlines of the banner attract the audiences attention, the font for these sell lines is the opposite colour of the border to create more of an aesthetic appeal to the front cover.

In the bottom right hand corner is a bar code for the magazine, there is also key information such as the date, the price and the issue number.

The contents page follows the same colour scheme as the front cover, this also follows throughout the whole magazine which makes it iconic and easily recognisable. At the top of the page is the magazine logo and the word 'content's in large letters. the font of the title is in large, bold, black font; this stands out from the white background of the page. Next to the title is the words 'this week' and the date of the magazine issue.

The first box of the contents page informs the reader of the current number one albums and singles of the week, this is appealing as it keeps the audience up to date with the most recent music releases. There is a picture on the right hand side, it has been shot in the photography studio to add the professional touch to it. A prop such as a microphone will be used for my model, this shows what she enjoys doing most within the music industry. Her costume will also be on trend and attractive to the audience who would like to wear similar clothing. At the bottom of the photograph is a brief description of the article, the title and the page it can be found on.

The bottom half of the page displays the contents of the magazine, they are divided up into sections. The sections are shown by a small banner. Each article has the title, written in block capital letters, then a brief description of what the page is about, this is written in lower case letters. The brief summary interests the reader before they read the article. In a red font is the page number, this has a red border around it to separate it from the title of the article.

On the right hand side is a three boxes, these will contain photographs of the articles that are also used within the magazine. They will be close up shots of the artist's face. The page number of the article will also be displayed on the photograph. Most of the font is black, i may consider changing the colour of the banners separating the articles to red so they stand out from the rest of the black fonts.

the double page spread also follows the three palette colour scheme used on the previous pages. The title of the article is displayed in the top left corner of the first page, it is a large front in block capitals. Underneath the title is the caption 'the hottest double act in town' this is also in capitals to show it isn't part of the main article.

Underneath this is a brief description of the article, it spreads across two columns and provides the reader with background information about the new band. The main article takes up four columns, my target audience told me that this was just the right amount as it is balanced with pictures too. The font of the article will be black, simple and small making it easy to read and not too off-putting. I will use a clear and simple font such as tahoma, arial or calibri, in a small but easy to read size; somewhere between 10 and 12.

The photographs on my page will be taken on location and in the photography studio. In the photography studio i will take a photograph of my band in action, a guitar could be used as a prop as this connote the type of music they are interested in and makes them appealing to the audience. The photographs need to attract the audience as they are a new band they want to gain as many fans as possible. One photograph could be taken on location, against a brick wall. The brick wall creates an artistic background to work with. The light used here will be natural sunlighting and in the studio i will use the lighting to flatter and enhance the image. On the left page i will include two photographs, also taken on location, these photographs will use more of a casual pose to connote the fun they enjoy in their life.

On the page will be two quotes taken directly from the artists, they will be written in a larger font than the text, also in a red font so it stands out from the black font used in the article. The quote will also used large, red quotation marks to clearly show it is a quote and will have a red border outlining it from article.

At end of the article is the logo of the magazine, this reinforces the exclusivity of the article which has only be reviewed by M. Also, at the bottom of the page it provides the audience with information such as the page number and the logo of the magazine. Having the page number at the bottom of the page makes it easier for the reader to find the article they are looking for.
