Risk and Hazard Assessments

Photography Studio
Hazard: Cables
What could cause harm?
Lots of wires will be used for different pieces equipment and this may cause a trip hazard
What is the likelihood of this happening?
As long as the people in the studio are sensible and watch where they are stepping there should be no harm
How much harm?
If someone trips over the wire it could be quite serious
How will this risked be managed?
To manage the risk I could use black tape or a mat to cover the cables and make the photography studio a safer environment
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hazard: Electricity
What could cause harm?
Lots of electrical equipment being used at once could potentially be quite dangerous
What is the likelihood of this happening?
This is not likely if all the pieces of equipment have been put through a safety test
How much harm?
Electric shocks could harm a person quite a lot
How will this risked be managed?
Things should be turned off correctly when they have been finished with and anything that looks faulty should not be used
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hazard: Lighting
What could cause harm?
Bright lights being used to increase the quality of the photograph could shine into the eyes of the model
What is the likelihood of this happening?
This is quite unlikely if the positioning of the lights are set up correctly
How much harm?
If the light shines into someone’s eyes it may have the potential to blind the model
How will this risked be managed?
The lighting should be adjusted so it isn’t too bright and doesn’t shine directly into the eyes of the subject

Brick wall, around college
Hazard: Animals or Insects
What could cause harm?
My photographs taken in this location are outside so I cannot control the amount of insects and animals, such as birds, that may appear in the background of the photograph
What is the likelihood of this happening?
If I take lots of photographs then it is unlikely that an animal or insect will spoil every image
How much harm?
This does not cause harm to the models and any imperfections in the image such as animals or insects can be edited out at a later stage
How will this risked be managed?
As my photo shoot will take place in the winter months there isn’t as many insects or animals around as in the months of summer
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hazard: Audience or Public
What could cause harm?
As my photograph will be taken outside in a public area I cannot control the amount of people walking around in the background
What is the likelihood of this happening?
This is quite unlikely that someone who is not part of my photo shoot will step into the photograph, I can ask people to walk a behind me instead of in front of the camera
How much harm?
This does not cause any harm to the models or the photographs as the hazard can be prevented
How will this risked be managed?
I can ask people to not walk in front of the camera while a picture is being taken, this will reduce the hazard of extra people in my photographs
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hazard: Lighting
What could cause harm?
I cannot control the lighting outside as it will be natural and provided by the sun
What is the likelihood of this happening?
The lighting of the sun may be a problem for my outdoor photo shoot
How much harm?
This could potentially affect my photo shoot as if the lighting is not enough then I cannot take decent images
How will this risked be managed?
If the sun causes a problem to my photo shoot I will have to rearrange it do another date and hope for better weather.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hazard: Noise
What could cause harm?
As the photo shoot will be outside I cannot control the amount of noise that may appear in the background
What is the likelihood of this happening?
This may be quite likely in an outdoor environment
How much harm?
This will not cause any harm to my photographs as I am not recording a scene so the noise will not be ‘heard’ in the images
How will this risked be managed?
It doesn’t matter if this risk is managed or not, it doesn’t cause harm to my photographs so it is not an important factor
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hazard: Roads
What could cause harm?
Doing a photo shoot outside could be dangerous if I was taking my photographs near a road
What is the likelihood of this happening?
Roads are dangerous places to stand and take photographs so this may be likely if I was to use a wall near a road
How much harm?
Potentially roads could cause a lot of harm to my images
How will this risked be managed?
I will choose a location that is not near a road so it eliminates this factor
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hazard: Vehicles
What could cause harm?
Vehicles passing by could cause an imperfection in my image
What is the likelihood of this happening?
If I was to chose a location near a road with vehicles passing frequently it would be very likely of this hazard
How much harm?
If my location was situated near a place with many vehicles it could cause a lot of harm to me, my models or my photographs
How will this risked be managed?
To eliminate this risk completely my location will not be near a place with lots of vehicles
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hazard: Weather
What could cause harm?
An outdoor photo shoot has to rely on good weather to take good quality photographs
What is the likelihood of this happening?
This may be quite a likely hazard, especially since my photo shoot will be taken in the winter months
How much harm?
The weather could cause a lot of harm; it may even have to cancel my photo shoot
How will this risked be managed?
If the weather disrupts my photo shoot I will have to rearrange it to another date or improvise with props such as umbrellas to make the photograph work
